George Will

I got to see George Will speak at Elon last night and speak with him briefly after. Highlights from his speech:
- All other political systems have failed - communism, socialism, marxism, etc. There are now more Marxists at Harvard than in Eastern Europe.
- Ronald Reagan: “I don’t want to go back to the past. I want to go back to the past’s way of facing the future.”
- There is no reasonable conclusion to Iraq.
- It’s not the 22nd amendment that’s stopping George Bush from seeking a third term.
- Two questions about Iraq: Are there Iraqis? Is there an Iraq?
- We executed regime change in the American South, starting with the Civil War and progressing through Jim Crow, the civil rights movement, etc. It took about 125 years for that regime change (change in leadership, change in culture, etc.). We tried to do it in Iraq in six months.
Will was thoughtful and engaging, though as with most speeches like this it was obviously boilerplate. He was quick on his feet, though, especially during the student Q&A earlier in the afternoon.
