In baseball, numbers matter. Hank Aaron’s home runs. Pete Rose’s hits. Ted Williams’ batting average in 1941, when he was the last player to hit above .400. Joe DiMaggio’s hitting streak. Cy Young’s wins. Babe Ruth’s home runs (since eclipsed by Aaron). Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games streak (since eclipsed by Ripken, whose streak ended at I-don’t-know-how-many-games). Roger Maris’ single-season home run record (since eclipsed by Andro/McGwire, and ‘Roid/Sosa, and HGH/Bonds).
