Champions Again

Champions Again has a great niche - throwback college apparel, including this NC State sweatshirt and even some throwback Elon swag.

Champions Again was founded by two Elon grads (a Sports Med major and a Poli Sci major - go figure), and they’ve now got two other employees. So they’re still a small company with a lot of room to grow.

And it seems to me they have a great opportunity to expand their line from signature championship seasons (1983 NC State basketball, 1991-1992 Duke basketball, 1988 Notre Dame football, 1968 Ohio State football, etc.) to signature seasons of schools that haven’t won a national championship (I’d be all over a 1979 Indiana State national runner-up shirt, and seasons like Purdue’s 1967 Rose Bowl season, Northwestern’s 1996 Rose Bowl season, and more). It’s a way to expand their market yet stay focused on Division I collegiate apparel.

They could look at going down to the D2 and D3 level, but that’s really getting into a micro-niche there, and they probably want to only go there for special orders (from a university bookstore or athletics department, for example). And they could go up to the major league level, but they face a lot of competition there.

  1. Thanks for the tip. I looked at the site and they have some great ideas and really unique designs. Even if it wasn’t a natinoal championship shirt, some of these designs would work great. This is an interesting idea and I hope they do well. I am going to get a few shirts myself and for others for x-mas.

  2. Brian, uh, this has nothing to do with this post, I’m just trying to get in touch. I’ll test your Hauser basketball history..think back to the class of 96. Remember the tall lanky Taylor kid, well, thats me. My wife and i live in Denver. Last week I was searching around for my nephew’s Columbus East football game and somehow my googling found me on your site. Dude, I’m intrigued by some of the stuff on your blog. I had to change my shorts after seeing a guy with interest in Emergent, house churches, and Indiana high school basketball all at once. I didn’t know such a man existed in Columbus Indiana. I’ve got 3 weeks left in an M.Div degree at Denver Seminary. I’m currently involved with an organization called missio (see www.missio.us) and am part of a small church plant called Adullam (see www.adullamdenver.com) and am interested in beginning a network of small missional communities in the Denver area.
My parent just moved off the farm and now live on the north side of Columbus. I’ll be up for a visit in a month.
I’m curious man. Tell me more about what your up to there.
