Derek Jeter

As sick as I am of all the Yankee-Lovers out there, I really like Derek Jeter. He’s clutch (the anti-ARod), he plays the game the right way, and he legitimately seems like a good guy. But I’ve always thought he was overrated.

Not now. Jeter got his 2000th career hit Friday night, reaching that milestone quicker than all but 4 other players since 1970: Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn, Kirby Puckett, and Rod Carew (HT: the PTI podcast, 5/26 edition). That’s walking in some tall cotton. Those four can hit, and so can Jeter.

  1. I never understood the Jeter haters either. Foolish backlash against the NY media I guess.

I remember going around and around with people back in the day that I would take Jeter over A-Rod and Garciaparra when all three were at their zenith. My main argument was the clutch argument. The guy was put on the biggest stage in the world at a young age and he thrived. That’s what it’s about. October. Not Sunday afternoon in July.
