Comedy Central Should Be Ashamed

Comedy Central has no balls. They don’t hesitate to air shows with the most vile and despicable language and content, including celebrity roasts, stand-up comedians, and shows like South Park that violate all common decency.

But now they refuse to even show an image of Muhammad:

The duo behind South Park have used the cartoon’s latest episode to attack their network for banning them from using an image of the Prophet Muhammad.

Comedy Central prevented Matt Stone and Trey Parker from using the image after the furor caused by a Danish newspaper publishing caricatures of Muhammad.

Instead, Wednesday’s episode showed an image of Jesus Christ defecating on President George Bush and the US flag.

Comedy Central said in a statement that it stood by its decision.

“In light of recent world events, we feel we made the right decision,” it said.

Until this month I’ve probably seen a total of two or three episodes of South Park. It just doesn’t interest me that much, plus the language is despicable. But I heard about the Church of Scientology suing Comedy Central over the airing of an episode about Scientology, so I cruised over to YouTube and watched the Scientology episode. It was pretty funny, especially the whole section with THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE plastered across the screen.

And last week I stumbled across Part I of “Cartoon Wars” about “The Family Guy” showing an image of Muhammad. The episode raises big question about Free Speech and the First Amendment. So on Wednesday I watched Part II, which is the first time I’ve ever watched South Park on its first airing. It was an OK episide and a great demonstration of the asinine decision-making in modern media. It’s perfectly fine to show “Jesus Christ defecating on President George Bush and the US flag” but not fine to show Muhammad at all. Instead, the image of Muhammad is blacked out and covered with this text: “In this shot, Muhammad hands a football helmet to Family Guy,” and successively, “Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Muhammad on their network.”

Despicable. Comedy Central should be ashamed, but they’ve shown repeatedly that they have no shame.

The image here is one of the original Muhammad cartoons that started all this. Here are the rest.
