ACC Baseball

ACC baseball is just sick. In the latest USA Today Coaches Poll, the ACC has 4 of the top 9 teams, 5 of the top 12, and 7 of the top 19. And Wake Forest is the bubble team, the top vote-getter to not make it into the top 25. Here’s the poll:

1. RICE [C-USA]
2. CAL STATE FULLERTON [Big West]
3. NORTH CAROLINA [ACC]
4. NEBRASKA [Big 12]
5. FLORIDA STATE [ACC]
6. TEXAS [Big 12]
7. SOUTH CAROLINA [SEC]
8. GEORGIA TECH [ACC]
9. CLEMSON [ACC]
10. OREGON STATE [Pac 10]
11. ARIZONA STATE [Pac 10]
12. NC STATE [ACC]
13. OKLAHOMA [Big 12]
14. ALABAMA [SEC]
15. MISSISSIPPI STATE [SEC]
16. ARKANSAS [SEC]
17. VIRGINIA [ACC]
18. LSU [SEC]
19. MIAMI (FL) [ACC]
20. VANDERBILT [SEC]
21. COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON [Southern]
22. OLD DOMINION [Colonial]
23. NOTRE DAME [Big East]
24. USC [Pac 10]
25. KENTUCKY [SEC]

The SEC has 7 in the top 25 as well (get that - two conferences account for 14 of the top 25). At first blush it looks like the ACC has the edge with more teams at the top of the poll and fewer at the bottom, but let’s see. Assigning reverse point values for each spot in the top 25 (25 points for #1, 24 points for #2….1 point for #25) here’s what we’ve got:

ACC: 23 + 21 + 18 + 17 + 14 + 9 + 7 = 109
SEC: 19 + 12 + 11 + 10 + 8 + 6 + 1 = 67

So it’s not even close. The ACC is clearly on top, at least as of now.

Here’s how the other conferences shake out:

Big 12: 22 + 20 + 13 = 55
Pac 10: 16 + 15 + 2 = 34
C-USA: 25 = 25
Big West: 24 = 24
Southern: 5 = 5
Colonial: 4 = 4
Big East 3 = 3

It’ll be interesting to see how the season shakes out for Rice and CS-Fullerton since both teams are the only representative from their conference in the top 25. Are their records inflated due to playing (relatively) inferior competition? Are the teams from the ACC, SEC, Big 12, and Pac 10 more battle-tested from playing a higher caliber of competition throughout the season?

And, the Elon Phoenix moved up in the “also receiving votes” tally this week after knocking off Wake Forest and sweeping a 3 game series from The Citadel. The Phoenix recieved 2 points to tie them for #50 overall, and this week they move up with 13 points to #35 overall. Elon has the nation’s 5th longest winning streak (7 games) and the 2nd longest home winning streak (12 games). Elon hosts High Point tonight at 7pm.

  1. Took the kids to see UNC play VT last Friday. That’s a strong team.

Fun time, too. Walked up, bought two adult tix ($5 each), kids under six free, all general admission, all good seats, easy parking, nice all around.

  2. Good word. I blogged about this sometime ago. My daughter and Joel’s live on the 6th floor overlooking the Heel’s baseball field.

  3. Man, my gators were #2 pre-season, and now aren’t even ranked. Billy Donovan needs to give the baseball team some tips.
