Google Maps the Census

The Google Maps Census Mashup is an amazing tool. Enter an address and it gives pertinent information (population, income, age, etc.) from the 2000 census in a 1, 3, or 5 mile radius.
Absolutely brilliant and one of the most useful mashups I’ve seen yet. Especially great for demographic market studies.
One interesting tidbit found with the mashup, about Alamance County schools:
Average income within 1 mile of Cummings High School: $39,817
Average income within 1 mile of Eastern Alamance High School: $49,621
Average income within 1 mile of Graham High School: $39,838
Average income within 1 mile of Southern Alamance High School: $52,815
Average income within 1 mile of Western Alamance High School: $45,105
Average income within 1 mile of Williams High School: $50,949

You should expand the rural schools to more than one mile in order to get a better comparison of numbers. I am sure there are a lot more school going families within one mile of city schools than there are within a mile of the rural ones.

I would have laid big money that Williams would have topped that list! A five mile average might be more telling.
Found you via blogmap… I’ve enjoyed your blog!
