Church 2.0

TallSkinnyKiwi rocks Church 2.0:

Anyway, the ideas of collaboration, participation, distributed power etc, are all very similar to what we are seeing in the newer crop of churches started by media savvy, web-native people and bloggers. That makes me want to suggest . . .

Church 2.0 . . . a missional ecclesiastic response to a culture influenced by the values of Web 2.0

Yes! Web 2.0 is being carried out by new media orgs (Flickr, de.licio.us, Wikipedia, and more) because old media orgs have too much to lose and have lost the ability to remove their institutional/hierarchical lenses. So it will be with Church 2.0. New expressions must raise up outside the control of existing structures.

Not all are called to this, and just as Web 2.0 doesn’t try to invalidate Web 1.0, Church 2.0 must not try to invalidate Church 1.0. Church 1.0 was absolutely essential in its time and still has a vital role. It must be recognized and honored for its ongoing contribution, and it must make room alongside itself and celebrate these new expressions, even as they’re attacked by some who identify with Church 2.0. Those who are called to lead Church 2.0 need to trust the Spirit to lead and encourage them as they learn new ways to be and lead the church and as they suffer the inevitable attacks from some who identify with Church 1.0.

The church is essentially a community, so the ideals of web 2.0 thinking fit nicely in the context of the church. Some say web 2.0 follows the attitude of Jesus. A lot of folks are talking about the idea of Church 2.0. We’re definitely not the first or the best to consider web 2.0 and Christianity. […]
