Ryan Dobson Podcast

Very interesting stuff at Ryan Dobson’s “Undone” podcast. His site tries to look very edgy - his picture (shaved head, goatee, earring) is prominent, the fonts look distressed, and it features red & white type on a black background. The music on his podcast is pretty strong (and has some great guitar riffs).

I’m listening to his April 18 podcast right now, which features Ryan interviewing his Dad (James Dobson). I was hoping to hear some great dialogue, and instead it’s a father-son lovefest. Still very interesting, but it seems Ryan & his dad are different enough that I thought there might be some give-and-take. A little tension is always better than a lovefest (more on that later), and I didn’t think this episode really brought anything new to the table - it could have been an episode of Focus on the Family and it would have been basically the same. Again, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just I thought Ryan Dobson would bring something different to the table.

An earlier podcast (April 11) featured Craig Gross of XXXChurch.com, and I’m really looking forward to listening to that one.

Another earlier podcast featured Mike DeVries, who I’m not familiar with at all but has a blog at awakening.typepad.com. The show description says, “Is the church irrelevant to today’s culture? If there was no heaven or hell would you follow Christ? How can we effect the culture?” Looking forward to listening to that show as well, especially because Ryan has gotten some heat about the episode. The criticism of Mike DeVries is this: “Mike was our camp speaker for 2004. He present false teachings and a false gospel last summer. He’s big on the Emergent Church. Listen to this audio clip of him on the Ryan Dobson Show (James Dobson’s son). See if you can hear the man-centered false gospel.” Ryan Dobson’s response: “Is there something inherently wrong with the Emergent Church? If you liked Mike or want to support him and the show I encourage you to visit this site and let them know how you feel.”

So James Dobson’s son, who completely agrees with his dad on seemingly everything, is a big defender of the emergent church. I wonder what Dr. Dobson thinks about it. Anyone seen anything from Dr. Dobson about emergence?
