Sustainability in Suburbia
By Brian on Feb 24, 2005
Great thoughts from Will:
But, as I sit here this morning, sipping my cocoa, in a big house in a neighborhood of big houses, with two Volvos parked outside, I am wondering how to live out the values of fair economics and sustainability in suburbia? In this world of The Gap and McDonalds, surrounded by McHouses where families live drive thru lives, how can we live lives that are redemptive and sustainable, that takes the creation mandate to heart in terms of both what to purchase and what not to purchase, in terms of how to not just consume but to contribute?
We’ve been working through some of these issues as well lately, both for financial and spiritual reasons. Our best indicator so far was that our trash can & recycling bins were significantly less full than normal. Less consumption = less waste = less to take to the curb.
It’s a start.
