The ancient Jewish sage Maimonides

The ancient Jewish sage Maimonides wrote this in the 12th century as part of his “Epistle to Yemen”:
“Jesus of Nazareth…impelled people to believe that he was a prophet sent by God to clarify perplexities in the Torah, and that he was the Messiah that was predicted by each and every seer. He interpreted the Torah and its precepts in such a fashion as to lead to their total annulment, to the abolition of all its commandments and to the violation of its prohibitions. The sages, of blessed memory, having become aware of his plans before his reputation spread among our people, meted out fitting punishment to him.”

Maimonides has been called the greatest Jewish sage of the last 1000 years. If a Jew of such high regard clearly sees and states that Jesus “interpreted the Torah and its precepts in such a fashion as to lead to their total annulment, to the abolition of all its commandments and to the violation of its prohibitions” why is it that the modern Christian church in North America (and maybe elsewhere, but that’s outside my realm of experience or knowledge) has such a love affair with the Jewish law? Are we afraid of the freedom Jesus has given us? Would we, like the Jews heading toward the Promised Land, prefer the certainty of bondage to the uncertainty of freedom?

Jesus, you have allowed us to be truly free - now help us to allow ourselves to be truly free.
